An oil painting is an expression on canvas that can reflect many things, from real life to abstract, and it one of the greatest gift ideas. Contrary to popular belief, painting in oil does not require that the artist to be a professional. Rather oil is a medium that is malleable, making it fun – even if it’s not always the easiest medium to use.

Where to Find Oil Paintings

An oil painting can be purchased for many occasions and does not have to be expensive. Depending on the size of the painting, its age, and the artist who painted it, oil paintings can range in price and value. Original oil paintings can be found in shows, such as at an artist expo, from a private dealer or at an antique auction. Original oil paintings can even be found online.

A Great Christmas Gift Idea

Christmas is a time of giving. Why not give a gift that will be fully appreciated? Whether you commission a painting to be done by an oil painting artist or decide to paint one yourself, an oil painting is one of the greatest Christmas gift ideas for a wife or other significant woman in your life such as a mother, a sister, a daughter or a best friend. Find out what she likes – landscapes, portraits, still life, modern art or another style and contact an oil painting artist who specializes in that particular form.

Have it Commissioned

An oil painting artist will usually charge a bit more for an original oil painting, however, the cost may be worth it to have a painting that will become a Christmas gift for your wife that she will never forget. Discuss your preferences with the oil painting artist and even consider bringing elements from your home or other things that hold meaning and have the artist incorporate them into the original oil painting they create for you. When you commission a painting, the oil painting artist is paid to create an original work that reflects your choices and style, so make sure you take part in the creative process as much as possible

Do it Yourself

If you decide to create an original oil painting yourself as a gift idea, keep in mind that perfection is probably not the best goal for a beginner. Rather, strive to be true to your creativity. While a portrait may be a more difficult challenge, painting a landscape or still life is generally not seen as difficult.

Where to Find Supplies

Supplies such as a canvas and frame, oil paints, brushes and other necessities can be purchased at any art store for much less than it would to commission an original oil painting as a Christmas gift for your wife. If you decide to commission an original oil painting as a Christmas gift for your wife, make sure to find an artist in enough time to complete the project before the holiday.

A great way to learn how to draw cartoon characters and add life to them is through studying some classical animation techniques. You don’t have to want to be an animator, but you should want to be willing to learn some valuable lessons that can potentially liven up your drawings with animation techniques such as squash and stretch, anticipation and exaggeration. Think of Disney and Pixar as examples. Have you ever seen a poorly developed character from these studios? Animators have to draw a character over and over hundreds if not thousands of times to get the movement down just right to show weight and personality. One reason is, to animate a character, the character’s design had to be able to convey the right message in its movement. If a character was poorly drawn then it would animate poorly, which would be unacceptable. The animators had to be able to animate and move the characters around in as easy and efficient manner as possible to capture the audiences attention. Pretty amazing for something as simple as a line drawing. The importance of a well drawn cartoon character was one of the crucial first steps in achieving their goals.

OK now, you can implement 4 steps for this process. Step one, learn how to draw basic shapes and turn them into a three dimensional counterpart, for example: a circle to a sphere, a square into a box, etc. Once you are able to do this (with practice), then you can move on to step two which is, manipulating the shape by twisting, squashing and stretching it into various forms and easily create many types of characters by combining shapes together. Next (as always) practice drawing constantly and consistently. You cannot skip this step and expect to grow as an artist and draw appealing characters. Once you are able to draw a basic character shape using the techniques described above you can easily expand and alter the shape(s) to your liking. The world is yours! Always remember to also draw from life as it is the greatest teacher, giving you the ability to draw realistic movement that will transfer into your character.

Visit the world of classical animation to see how you are able to use some of those techniques to enhance your cartoon character drawing. There are plenty of online resources as well as books available to help you, so remember to keep a sketchbook with you at all times. Sometimes, when drawing cartoon characters, you have to look outside your field of interests to help develop a skill and through the fabulous world of classical animation we can gain a lot of valuable inspiration, knowledge and insight.

Andre “Dre” Saunders attended Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland as an art major. He started freelancing as a designer and illustrator and has worked on projects for such clients as Dupont and the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children as well as creating several covers for a small book publisher.

He is married with four children (two boys and two girls) and is currently working on several projects including a comic book series, a short film, a stage and screen play, a graphic T-shirt line and preparing several characters for licensing and merchandising.

Drafting is also known as technical drawing, it is the method of creating drawing for architectures and engineering. A person who is skilled in this field is more popularly known as a draftsman.

Unfortunately most people lose this power as they grow older, or rather it is overlaid by more complicated mental processes. It needs only the desire to reawaken it and the courage to proceed and rapidly the power to express what one sees, in drawing and in paint, comes back again.

So take courage and go ahead.

The first thing to get is a sketchbook: not too big a one but a handy pocket size that you can carry about at all times. You can of course buy a children’s drawing book for a few cents, but this has a flimsy cover and has to be folded or rolled to carry, and that spoils the page, so a sketchbook with thinnish cartridge paper and a good stout cover is the best investment in the end. See that the paper is not too thick or too rough in surface. Nothing harder than a 3B pencil is much use. Get a black Conte crayon or black chalk pencil with the wood round it, for this is the kind of pencil that will give you most satisfaction in sketching. Of course you will need a razor blade or sharp penknife because the breaking of points is a very frequent occurrence. Do not sharpen the pencil to a fine point – just a blunted point.

Now you have your sketchbook and your pencil, what are you going to look for? What are you going to start on? Don’t start straightaway on a landscape. Just focus your attention on a few simple things that are before you in the room you are in. Something the shape of which attracts your interest, say a decanter, or a wine glass, or a vase of flowers. Draw a definite shape on the blank page of the sketchbook with a firm, thick line – say a rough oblong. Count this as your picture space: into this defined shape you are going to put your drawing.

Then begin with the part of the selected object that interests you most. Perhaps it is the bulge of the decanter – boldly draw the curve of the right-hand side and then look across and draw the corresponding curve of the other side; then go upward to the lip and the stopper, drawing first one side and then the other; then look at the base, the dark curve where the decanter rests upon the sideboard. You now have the shape of the object – then relate this to the glass that is near it; notice the size of the glass in relation to the decanter and repeat the process, taking into account where the two objects are placed in your oblong space.

Continuing to practice these techniques will help you get a grasp for the way drawing should feel and ultimately look.

Painters apparel comes in all sizes, shapes, and types. The major goal of painters apparel is to provide you with work wear that can look good, feel comfortable, and offer enough pockets and spaces you can paint what needs to be painted without worrying about your working attire.

Are you a painter? Regardless of whether you are a full time, career painter or a hobbyist where painting is simply something you do because the occasion arises and you enjoy the task at hand.

The majority of painting pants offer extra carrying space for those brushes and extra tools you may find necessary to accomplish your task the fastest and safest.

Painters pants come in a variety of sizes and a white or natural coloration allowing you the benefits of a clean slate so to speak. Of course, you will find that along with those versatile pants come a line of shorts. Yes, you can protect your legs from paint while staying warm or cool depending on your environment and preferences.

One of the all time favorites is the bib overall popular within the painting profession. You get a lot of functionality with all that pocket space, and the build of bib overalls means you will not have to worry about a belt or your pants or trousers falling down as you reach to pain those tall spaces that need to be touched up or covered. The pockets start at the chest and work their way down. Ultimate functionality!

Of course, work wear for the paint professional is an absolute enjoyable task, but the task would not be complete without adding a few jackets, coats, or other outerwear specifically designed with the task of painting at hand. That outwear comes in a variety of colors and sizes. Of course, you may need an all season jacket or a heavy duty lined coat for ultimate warmth. No matter what you need when it comes to outwear, there is something specifically designed for you!

What do you need to complete your work wear ensemble?

There are a range of accessories and other niceties you may find beneficial to your task at hand and future tasks. From paintbrushes to paint utility belts, there are work wear designers making your working day a little bit easier. And at this price, who could ask for anything more.

As a professional or hobbyist painter you realize the necessity for having the appropriate apparel. Painting is messy and chaotic at times, and the right attire means you are able to concentrate on the task at hand not on whether your paints are going to stay up as you reach to those hard to reach places.

Oil paints normally take more time period to dry in comparison with normal paints. It can be a one week or more then that to dry up. Due to this you get a chance to improve or find out all the flaws in the painting .Another feature of the oil painting is that it can look better when it is mixed with any another color. So it helps you to draw the shades exactly on you oil painting. More than this, a unique shine appears in your painting which will look great than any another normal painting. Oil paints are the best use for painting a human body because the paints base is same like the human complexion.

The greatest part of the oil painting is that in the time of drying it will not disappear just like any other water color. Rather than that oil paint carries a chemical form due to which its drying process take more time than the normal one. So from this you can again concentrate on your painting and its texture.

The best way for purchasing the oil paints:

There are various kinds of oil paints available in market and the rates also differ according to the quality of product. There are also different forms available in market like some oil paints are very solid and some are very thin. So at last choosing the suitable colors for the painting depends on your budget and also the type of expression you wish to express. Colors also play an important role in the painting because it will add soul in the painting.

You also have to buy some essential item because without which you will not be able to complete your painting and even wont be able to use the paints .Purchase any synthetic substitutes for oil paint or oil that can make your painting more beautiful. Brushes are also essential. In the market there are no of oil paint brushes but inflexible brushes are best suited with oil painting.

Oil paintings come in all shapes and sizes, and may be based on a variety of themes to appeal to all tastes. They may be painted on different types of material, such as canvas or cardboard. Original classic oil paintings are among the most valuable works of art that exist; some are valued at millions of dollars. While a number of valuable oil paintings are displayed in museums, private collectors who buy art for their personal enjoyment or as an investment also own some.

The ensuing discussion provides top 7 techniques of Oil Painting. Lets look.

Creating Fundamental Structure. All the forms in an Oil Painting are created from the basic five shapes viz., Sphere, Cone, Cylinder, Cube, and the doughnut shaped Torus.

Color Blending. The gradual transition from one color of Oil Paint to another is called Blending. As Oil Paints, take time to dry, the wet Oil Paints easily move around on the Canvas. This easy movement of wet Oil Paints on the Canvas, makes the Blending easy. The Paint Brush is dragged back and forth between the colors until the suitable Blend is achieved.

Matching colors. The artist handles colors with the help of a Color Wheel. The Color Wheel, an essential tool for matching colors, is a Circle, sporting basic 7 rainbow colors. It is arranged with Yellow, the lightest value color, on the top, and with Violet, the darkest value color, at the bottom. The band of colors on a Color Wheel are divided into Warm Colors such as, Yellow-Orange, Orange, Red-Orange, Red, and Red-Violet, and Cool Colors such as, Yellow-Green, Green, Blue-Green, Blue, and Blue-Violet.

Contrast. The correlation between the lightest light and the darkest dark shades in an Oil Painting is called Contrast. The representation of Color Value from Black to White is called Value Scale. The distances between the values on the Value Scale decide the levels of Contrast.

Texture. This is another significant factor in Oil Painting. It is clearly seen at the transition of light to the shadow. The sharpness of the focus on a picture decides the smoothness of the object. The same object would have a better texture in direct light than in a shade.

Glaze and Wash. The Transparent Layers in Oil Painting are called Glaze. Glaze is a thin, see-through color, used over another dry color to create a third color. Glaze always darkens a color. Translucent Layers in Oil Painting are called Wash. Wash is a thin opaque color, used over another dry color.

Shadow. Shadows are of three types, Shadow, Cast Shadow, and Proximity Shadow. The dark shade an object creates is called its Shadow. Cast Shadow is the absence of light caused by the object in its environment. It is easily identified, as it is always the darkest and is mostly focused near the source. Proximity Shadow is the Dark Shadow formed when the objects touch each other. This is considered the darkest part of an Oil Painting.
